Hyogo/Amagasaki | One-Day Miko (Shrine Maiden) Experience: Shrine Etiquette, Kagura Dance & Traditional Rituals
Itinerary Details
A Day as a Miko: Step Inside the Sacred World of a Japanese Shrine
Led by a Shinto priest, begin by exploring the shrine grounds, learning how to pay your respects and taking a peaceful walk through the sacred space. You will then change into traditional miko attire and practice Kagura dance at the shrine office for approximately 30–60 minutes. The priest will explain the meaning and traditions behind the dances, before you learn basic movements such as Hiragana, San-San-Kyu no Ou, and fan dances. Once you have practiced the movements, you will ascend to the altar with the priest and perform the Kagura you have learned as an actual offering to the deities. This solemn ritual offers a rare opportunity to experience Japanese Shinto traditions from within. After the ceremony, return to the shrine office, change back into your own clothes, and conclude the experience. Depending on the schedule, you may also have some time to relax at the shrine office.
