The Pinnacle of World Wooden Architecture: A Heritage Tour of Ikaruga and Nishinokyo
The temples of Nara are not only centers of faith but also testaments to the pinnacle of architectural art. Horyuji Temple, the world’s oldest wooden architectural complex; Yakushiji Temple, showcasing the symmetrical aesthetics of the Tenpyō culture; and Tōshōdai-ji Temple, founded by Jianzhen and his envoy to Japan—these unparalleled gems scattered throughout the Nara suburbs are difficult and time-consuming to access by public transportation. This tour connects them all in a dedicated bus. A professional guided tour provides commentary throughout, allowing you to easily understand the evolution of Buddhist culture from the Asuka to the Tenpyō periods—over a thousand years—within a single day. Behind each wooden structure lies a historical story worth savoring.
A fusion of taste and sight: Kamameshi (rice cooked in a clay pot) and Meien Matcha
Beyond the architectural marvels, this journey also includes culinary experiences unique to Nara. Enjoy a steaming hot pot meal at midday, experiencing the simple warmth of local food culture. In the afternoon, visit Jiko-in Temple, one of the three most famous gardens in Japan, and savor freshly brewed matcha and exquisite wagashi (Japanese sweets) in the tranquil dry landscape garden, allowing your mind to slowly settle amidst the aroma of tea and the tranquility of Zen. After the visual spectacle, what the soul truly needs is peace – this is the most complete way to experience Nara.
