Winter-limited Ice Wall: Exploring the Mysterious Icefall
When the harsh winter arrives, certain rock walls outside Abashiri freeze due to groundwater, forming giant icefalls that shimmer with blue and white light. This hidden paradise is unknown even to many locals. Put on snowshoes, step on the untouched fresh snow, and listen to the crisp sound of the snow crunching under your feet. When that enormous ice wall appears before your eyes, you will deeply appreciate the magical power of nature to freeze time.
Touching the Temperatures of the Far North: Coastal Drift Ice Trail
Drift ice in the Sea of Okhotsk is a symbol of Hokkaido in winter. This tour not only takes you to see the ice, but also lets you “play on the ice.” Walking along the coastline, if the drift ice is in good condition that day, the guide will lead you safely to experience the unique thrill of walking on solid ice. Even on days when the drift ice hasn’t arrived, the spectacular sea erosion and wildlife along the coast will ensure you don’t leave empty-handed.

Gear preparation and icefall hiking
Meeting point, pick-up and drop-off, and equipment confirmation
The tour guide will pick you up at the agreed location. Upon arrival at the starting point, we will confirm your attire and snowshoes, and explain safety precautions and the key points of today’s route.
Snowshoes venture into the mysterious icefall
Put on your snowshoes and step into the silvery-white forest. Challenge yourself on a steep slope and feel the buoyancy of your snowshoes in the deep snow. Reach the icefall and witness the magnificent ice wall that even locals rarely know about.
Coastal drift ice experience and return
Coastline walking and touching drift ice
Leave the forest trail and head towards the coast. Walk along the snow-covered beach, searching for giant ice floes that have been washed ashore. Under the safe supervision of a guide, touch or briefly step onto the ice to capture a truly iconic polar souvenir photo.
Return pick-up and drop-off and end of trip
Return to the meeting point, still feeling the essence of the snow country. Your guide will then take you back to your accommodation, train station, or icebreaker departure area to continue your afternoon exploration of Abashiri.

Important Notes: * Physical Limitations: Participants must complete a 2-3 km walk, including steep inclines. Individuals weighing over 100 kg, pregnant women, or those with poor balance are not permitted to participate.

Clothing recommendations: Please be sure to wear high-top waterproof hiking boots and waterproof and windproof clothing (ski suits are preferred).
