Do you only have one day to fully experience “Abashiri Winter”? Then choose this one.
Led by a local nature guide, this tour offers a complete winter experience: snowshoeing along icefalls and drift ice coastlines, observing great eagles/white-tailed eagles, and fishing for giant smelt in Lake Abashiri (including freshly fried tempura) .
Note: Natural phenomena do not guarantee that ice floes will reach the shore, and icefalls may also experience partial collapses depending on the time of year; in addition, fishing for male fish in Lake Abashiri will be prohibited after February 12, 2026 , which may lead to adjustments to the content or partial suspension.

- A one-day all-inclusive experience including drift ice skating, wildlife observation, and smelt fishing, all in one package, without having to purchase three separate tours.
- Nature guide tours are led by nature guides in vehicles to spot raptor hotspots and provide binoculars/spectacles to assist with observation.
- Winter-limited activities such as icefall snowshoeing, touching the drifting ice, and male fish fishing are all available “only in winter”.
- Even beginners can enjoy this hand-in-hand fishing method, making it easy for fishing novices to get started.

Morning | Snowshoeing: Icefall + Drift Ice Coast
After arriving at the starting point by car, put on your snowshoes and set off. The journey takes approximately 2-3 km and 2.5 hours .
* Walking distance may vary depending on weather conditions.
Noon | Lunch break in the city
We can deliver to your chosen restaurant (meal expenses are your own responsibility), or you can ask your tour guide for recommendations.
Afternoon ① | Bird of prey observation (Great Eagle and White-tailed Eagle)
- The tour guide drives around to find locations, and if a target is encountered, the driver gets out of the car to observe it with binoculars/telescopes, which takes about 1.5 hours .
Afternoon 2 | Abashiri Lake smelt fishing experience
- After a short restroom break, the tour proceeds to Lake Abashiri for approximately 100 minutes , where the fish caught are prepared as hot tempura.
Around 16:20 | Disband
They will take you back to your accommodation, Michino Station, JR Abashiri Station, or other locations.

Free shuttle service information
- Pick-up/drop-off service available for: accommodations in Abashiri city, JR Abashiri Station, and the Michi-no-Ship O-Ro-Taminal ferry terminal, etc.
- Pick-up and drop-off service areas include: Michi no Eki-Oro-Taminal, JR Abashiri Station, Lakeside Hotel Abashiri, hotels around JR Abashiri Station, and hotels in the Abashiri Central area.
- Areas where pick-up and drop-off are not permitted: Abashiri-Uhara area, Kitahama area, Masuura area, Memanbetsu Airport, etc.
- If your accommodation is far away: those outside the pick-up and drop-off area will be arranged to meet at Abashiri Station, bus terminal, JR Abashiri Station, etc.
※ If you have large luggage, please discuss this when making your reservation (large luggage may not be able to be accommodated due to the availability of the shuttle bus).
Participation Requirements
- Age: 12-70 years old
- Snowshoeing: Approximately 2-3 km, with one uphill and downhill section along the way, where you cannot turn back .
- The following individuals are ineligible to participate:
- Unable to complete 3 km snow walker
- People who are unable to walk or climb bus stairs without assistance
- Weight over 100 kg
- Those with poor balance/fear of heights
- Pregnant women or those who drank alcohol on the day of the incident
- Natural phenomenon reminder: You may encounter partial collapse of the icefall, or you may not see any drift ice on the day.
Rental (optional)
- Clothing rental: ¥500 extra per item
- Long boots rental: ¥300 extra per pair
- Boots included in this trip: Boots rental is free.
Cancellation rules (based on the official reservation form)
- 7-4 days prior to departure: 20% fee will be charged.
- 3 days to the day before departure: 50% of the fee will be charged.
- On the same day : 100% of the fee will be collected.
- ※ No charge will be charged if the trip cannot be completed within the scheduled time due to traffic disruptions or if the trip is cancelled in advance due to severe weather.
