Furano | Unearth Winter-Sweet Cabbage: A Snow-Covered Farm Harvest Experience
Itinerary Details
Nature’s Refrigerator: Why Cabbage Gets Sweeter Under the Snow
Why does cabbage become sweeter in winter? Buried beneath layers of snow, the vegetables are naturally protected from the cold while gradually developing a sweeter flavor. At a farm in Furano, you’ll step into the snowy fields and dig through the snow to uncover vibrant green cabbages hidden beneath the surface. Local farmers will explain how they grow and harvest these winter vegetables, and you can taste the freshly unearthed cabbage right on the farm.
From Snow to Table: A Warming Hot Pot with Freshly Harvested Cabbage
After working in the snow, warm up with a hearty hot pot made using the cabbage you have just harvested. Weather permitting, the meal can be enjoyed outdoors surrounded by snow; if conditions are unsuitable, it will be served indoors. Watching the steam rise from a pot filled with freshly harvested vegetables creates a memorable farm-to-table experience unique to the winter countryside of Hokkaido.
