For more than 1,400 years, the sacred mountains of Dewa have preserved an unbroken tradition of mountain worship and spiritual practice.
This experience is far more than a hike. Guided by an authentic Yamabushi and supported by an English interpreter throughout the journey, you’ll slow down, disconnect from everyday life, and immerse yourself in ancient rituals, quiet forests, and sacred mountain paths.
By climbing the historic stone steps of Mount Haguro, you’ll follow the same pilgrimage route walked by generations of practitioners, experiencing a journey of reflection, renewal, and personal transformation.
The Sacred Mountains of Dewa—A Pilgrimage of Life, Death, and Rebirth
For centuries, the Three Sacred Mountains of Dewa—Mount Haguro, Mount Gassan, and Mount Yudono—have been among Japan’s most important pilgrimage destinations.
Together, the three mountains symbolize the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. Pilgrims traditionally visit each mountain as part of a spiritual journey toward renewal and self-discovery.
The white robes worn during the pilgrimage symbolize leaving behind the ordinary self. By entering the sacred mountains dressed in white, participants symbolically let go of the past and begin a new chapter, following a tradition that has been practiced for more than 1,400 years.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive at the Shukubo and Prepare for Your Pilgrimage
Stay at Haguro Mountain Rokuro Shukubo "Daishinbo"
Step into a traditional shukubo (temple lodge) at the foot of Mount Haguro and experience the peaceful atmosphere that has welcomed pilgrims for centuries.
After check-in, your host will introduce the history of Dewa Sanzan, explain the significance of tomorrow’s pilgrimage, and share the traditions that have been preserved for more than 1,400 years.
Traditional Shojin Ryori Dinner
Enjoy an authentic shojin ryori dinner prepared with seasonal local ingredients.
Rooted in Buddhist tradition, shojin ryori emphasizes natural flavors, mindfulness, and harmony with nature, offering a unique culinary experience found only in Japan’s temple culture.
Day 2: Walk the Sacred Path with a Yamabushi
Breakfast • Yamabushi Orientation • Dressing in White Pilgrimage Robes
After breakfast and check-out, your large luggage will be transferred to Saikan.
Before beginning the pilgrimage, your Yamabushi guide will explain the spiritual meaning of the journey and help you change into the traditional white pilgrimage robes, symbolizing purity, renewal, and rebirth.
Your pilgrimage officially begins as you ascend the ancient stone steps of Mount Haguro.
Follow your Yamabushi guide along the historic pilgrimage route to the summit of Mount Haguro.
Pass through Zuishin Gate, cross the sacred Haraigawa River, and climb the 2,446 ancient stone steps beneath towering cedar trees that have watched over pilgrims for centuries.
Along the way, visit the National Treasure Five-Story Pagoda and experience the powerful sound of the horagai (conch shell) performed by your Yamabushi guide before continuing to the summit.
Free Time at the Summit
Enjoy free time at the summit to relax, have a light meal, or visit the Dewa Sanzan History Museum at your own pace.
Take in the peaceful atmosphere of this sacred mountaintop before continuing your pilgrimage.
Visit Sanjingosaiden, the Sacred Shrine of Dewa Sanzan
After reaching the summit, visit the magnificent Sanjingosaiden, where the deities of the Three Sacred Mountains are enshrined together.
Offer your prayers beneath its impressive thatched roof and experience one of Japan’s most important sacred sites.
Farewell to Your Yamabushi Guide at the Summit
After completing your pilgrimage, say farewell to your Yamabushi guide at the summit of Mount Haguro.
Take a moment to reflect on your journey before descending the mountain at your own pace, carrying with you the memories and spirit of this unique pilgrimage experience.

Participation Requirements
• Participants should be able to climb the 2,446 stone steps of Mount Haguro.
• A moderate level of physical fitness is recommended.
• Accommodation is in traditional Japanese shukubo lodgings with mostly shared bathroom facilities.
Cancellation Policy
• A 5% system processing fee applies to all cancellations made for personal reasons.
• 30% cancellation fee for cancellations made 7 days or more before departure.
• 50% cancellation fee for cancellations made 3–6 days before departure.
• 100% cancellation fee for cancellations made 1 day before departure, on the day of departure, or in the case of no-shows.
