A Temple Stay Like No Other: Slow Down and Reconnect with Yourself
The moment you step into Fugen-in Temple, the world outside begins to fade away. Set within approximately 3,000 tsubo of grounds, the temple offers seasonal gardens and a main hall built entirely from Aomori cypress. During your private stay, you can experience this peaceful space at your own pace.
This is not simply a visit to a tourist attraction. It is an opportunity to slow down, step away from your daily routine, and spend meaningful time in quiet reflection.
Through Buddhist image tracing, carefully follow each stroke with a brush as you recreate an image of the Buddha. During Zen meditation, turn your attention inward and become aware of your breath in the stillness of the temple.
You can also experience traditional prayers and purification rituals performed by the temple, offering a glimpse into practices that have been passed down through generations.
In the evening, share a memorable meal featuring Oma tuna, one of the region’s renowned delicacies, along with drinks and conversation with the temple’s staff. The following morning begins quietly with a traditional shojin ryori (Buddhist vegetarian meal).
More than a sightseeing experience, this is a chance to temporarily step away from the noise of everyday life and discover the restorative power of slow-paced temple life in Japan.
Oma Tuna & Shojin Ryori: Two Contrasting Philosophies of Temple Dining
Perhaps the most memorable part of your stay is the contrast between these two very different dining experiences.
As evening falls, the abbot personally joins you for a special dinner featuring Oma tuna, renowned for its rich flavor, alongside a selection of local Aomori ingredients. Enjoy drinks together and take your time over dinner, with the opportunity to chat with the abbot and ask questions about temple life, Buddhism, or the local area.
The following morning offers a completely different experience. Change into traditional monk-style robes and join the morning prayers before sitting down to a simple shojin ryori (Buddhist vegetarian meal). Made with seasonal ingredients and prepared with restraint, the meal reflects the Japanese philosophy of finding richness in simplicity.
From the indulgence of Oma tuna at night to the quiet simplicity of shojin ryori in the morning, these two meals reveal two contrasting sides of Japanese food culture—all within the peaceful setting of a historic temple.
