Oma tuna is known among tuna connoisseurs as Japan’s “Black Diamond”—a name that reflects its exceptional quality and reputation.
The bluefin tuna that migrate through the waters around the Shimokita Peninsula are prized for their rich, fatty flesh. For generations, Oma fishermen have relied on ippon-zuri (single-line fishing), using a rod, line, and hook rather than nets. This traditional method allows fishermen to carefully land individual fish while preserving their quality.
When Oma tuna reaches the market, it is highly sought after by top restaurants across Japan. More than simply a prized ingredient, it has become one of the most celebrated names in Japan’s fishing culture.
This experience takes you into that world. Board a working fishing boat, take up your rod, and face the legendary Oma tuna in its natural waters.
The Pride of Oma: Traditional Ippon-zuri Fishing
Oma fishermen traditionally catch tuna using ippon-zuri, a highly focused method of fishing with a single rod, line, and hook rather than longlines or seine nets.
Before setting out, your fishing master will personally teach you how to handle the rod and tackle, as well as the basics of tuna fishing and local maritime knowledge. This is more than simply waiting for a bite—it is an opportunity to understand the skill, patience, and pride behind Oma’s fishing tradition.
Whether you land a tuna depends on the sea conditions and the fish present that day. But even the waiting is part of the experience: standing aboard a fishing boat in the waters around the Shimokita Peninsula, feeling the sea breeze and watching the water as you wait for a bite.

Gathering & Orientation
Meet at the designated location in Oma Town. Your guide will explain the day’s schedule, safety precautions, and fishing equipment before departure.
Pre-Departure Fishing Workshop with a Master Fisherman
A local Oma fisherman will personally teach you how to use the fishing tackle and explain the techniques and maritime knowledge behind traditional tuna fishing in the waters around the Shimokita Peninsula. Put on your life jacket and get ready to head out to sea.
Set Sail & Challenge Oma's “Black Diamond”
Board the fishing boat and head into the waters around the Shimokita Peninsula, where Oma tuna are known to pass.
With guidance from the fisherman, take up your rod and try your hand at traditional ippon-zuri fishing. When a tuna takes the bait, be prepared for a powerful battle—the strength of an Oma tuna is something you have to experience for yourself.
If the monthly recreational fishing quota has already been reached, the fishing portion will be replaced with a boat trip to observe the fishing grounds and a hands-on demonstration of the fishing equipment, at no additional charge.
Return to Port & Departure
Return to port after approximately three hours on the water.
If you successfully catch a tuna and would like to take it home, our staff can assist with the initial processing, arrangements for cutting, and shipping preparation. Shipping is available within Japan only, and shipping fees are charged separately.

If You Choose to Take Your Catch Home:
– Initial processing
– Arrangement of tuna cutting and processing
– Assistance with shipping preparation
– Cutting/processing fee, ice, and basic packaging
– The tuna will be shipped in large blocks rather than sliced portions.
The fee does not include
– Food and drinks
– Transportation to and from the meeting point, including international and domestic transportation
– Personal medication, including seasickness medication
– Domestic travel accident insurance (participants are recommended to arrange their own insurance)
– Personal expenses and optional activities not specified in the itinerary
If You Choose to Take Your Catch Home:
– Packaging materials, such as styrofoam boxes
– Shipping fees, payable by the recipient (cash on delivery)
– Shipping costs vary depending on the weight of the catch.
Participation Instructions
– Participants must be 13 years old or older.
– Limited to one group per day, with 1–4 participants per group.
– The experience is priced at ¥350,000 per group, regardless of the number of participants.
– Bluefin tuna weighing less than 30 kg must be released in accordance with recreational fishing regulations and cannot be taken home.
– Catches can only be shipped to an address within Japan. International shipping is not available.
– The recreational bluefin tuna fishing quota usually reaches its limit around the 10th of each month. Once the quota has been reached, the fishing experience will be replaced by a boat trip to observe the fishing grounds and a fishing-equipment demonstration. The price remains unchanged.
– For safety reasons, the experience will be cancelled if the wave height exceeds 0.8 meters. Cancellation notices will be sent approximately two days in advance by email or phone using the contact details provided at booking. A full refund will be issued.
– The experience lasts approximately 3 hours and is generally not extended. If the experience runs longer because a fish has been hooked or landed, no additional charge will apply.
– Caught bluefin tuna may not be resold for profit in any form. Violations may breach the regulations of the relevant fisheries adjustment authority.

– **Once a reservation is made, a 5% cancellation fee will be charged if the reservation is cancelled due to personal reasons.**
