Deciphering the Footsteps of the Forest: Animal Tracking

There’s an unseen network of trails in the forest. Guided by experienced young hunters, you’ll learn to bend down and piece together animal tracks from the imprints on the ground, the gaps in the bark, and the remaining hairs. This course doesn’t teach killing; it teaches you how to observe attentively and how to truly connect with the land. The genuine sense of connection you feel when you successfully identify a deer’s hunting trail for the first time is something no indoor course can provide. Many participants say that it was the most “alive” half-day they’ve ever had in their lives.

Game Theory and Ethics: The Art of Setting Traps

Setting traps is a psychological game, and also a profound science. Where to place them? How to camouflage them? This involves a precise understanding of the terrain and animal behavior. The experience includes demonstrations by guides and hands-on practice, emphasizing the hunter’s creed of “safety first” and “minimizing prey suffering” throughout. Through this process, you will truly understand the indispensable role hunting plays in modern ecological conservation, and the responsibility that humans bear as part of the ecosystem—a life ethics lesson taught in the mountains and forests.

Advancing the Hunting Path: Track Reading and Observation

Follow the hunters into the forest trails, search for the hunting paths (trajectories) that animals have taken, observe the footprints and droppings, learn to judge the size and frequency of animal activity, and find the ideal place to place traps. The moment you successfully identify a hunting path for the first time, you will suddenly understand why hunters say “the forest speaks.”

Phase Two: Trap Implementation and Shooting Basics

In-depth review and attribution

After packing up our equipment, we had an in-depth discussion with the guide about the symbiotic relationship between conservation and hunting. We parted ways, refreshed by the scent of the mountains and filled with life lessons. It was suggested we continue our journey to the Sanriku coast to savor fresh local seafood, bringing this Iwate trip to a perfect close.
