Step into the forests of Otsuchi and learn how experienced local hunters identify signs of wildlife in the field. By observing footprints, animal trails, markings on trees, and other natural clues, you’ll gain insight into how hunters understand the movements and behavior of wild animals.
This experience focuses on observation, tracking skills, and a deeper understanding of the natural environment. As you learn to recognize the subtle signs hidden throughout the forest, you’ll discover a side of rural Japan that few visitors ever get to experience.
Trap Setting & Wildlife Management
Learn the fundamentals of traditional trapping techniques and the role they play in modern wildlife management. Guided by experienced local hunters, you’ll discover how terrain, animal behavior, and environmental conditions influence where traps are placed and how they are used responsibly.
Through demonstrations and hands-on activities, you’ll gain insight into the skills, knowledge, and ethical considerations involved in hunting and wildlife conservation. Meet Your Guide & Forest Safety Briefing
Meet your guide in Otsuchi and prepare for the experience with a safety briefing and equipment check. Before entering the forest, you’ll learn about local hunting culture, outdoor safety practices, and the importance of respecting nature and wildlife. This introduction provides essential knowledge for exploring the forest safely and responsibly.
Wildlife Tracking & Field Observation
Head into the forest with experienced local hunters and learn how to identify signs of wildlife activity. By observing animal tracks, trails, and other natural clues, you’ll gain insight into how hunters interpret the landscape and understand animal behavior.
As you explore the forest, you’ll develop a deeper appreciation for the skills and knowledge required to track wildlife in a natural environment.
Trap Setting & Air Rifle Experience
Hands-On Trap Setting & Air Rifle Basics
Learn the fundamentals of trap placement under the guidance of local hunters, including how terrain, wildlife movement, and environmental conditions influence where traps are set. Participants will also receive an introduction to air rifle safety and handling, followed by supervised target practice at a designated shooting area.
This practical experience provides valuable insight into the skills, responsibility, and safety considerations involved in hunting and wildlife management.
Tour Reflection & Return
After the activities, enjoy a discussion with your guide about wildlife conservation, hunting culture, and the relationship between local communities and the natural environment. The tour concludes in Otsuchi, leaving you with a deeper understanding of rural life, wildlife management, and the forests of northeastern Japan.

Recommended Clothing & Equipment
Participants should wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots with good traction, long-sleeved clothing suitable for outdoor activities, and weather-appropriate layers. Please also bring drinking water and any personal snacks you may require during the experience.
Experience Expectations
This program is designed as an educational introduction to wildlife tracking, hunting culture, and wildlife management in rural Japan. As wildlife is unpredictable, sightings of wild animals cannot be guaranteed.
Safety Guidelines
For safety reasons, all participants must follow the guide’s instructions at all times. Unauthorized handling of hunting equipment or firearms is strictly prohibited.
In the event of severe weather or unsafe conditions, the itinerary may be modified or cancelled. Participant safety will always be our highest priority.
Cancellation Policy
• A 5% system processing fee applies to all cancellations made for personal reasons.
• Cancellations made 7–4 days before the tour date: 30% cancellation fee
• Cancellations made 3–1 days before the tour date: 50% cancellation fee
• Cancellations made on the day of the tour or no-shows: 100% cancellation fee
