What is Yakusugi?

Yakusugi refers to naturally grown Japanese cedar trees on Yakushima that are more than 1,000 years old. The wood is prized for its high natural oil content, which helps protect it from decay and gives it a distinctive, rich aroma. Its durability and beautiful grain have made Yakusugi one of Yakushima’s most treasured natural materials.

A Sustainable Craft Rooted in Yakushima's Forests

Living Yakusugi trees are no longer harvested. Instead, the wood used in this experience comes entirely from naturally fallen or previously felled Yakusugi that has remained buried in the forest floor. By transforming this historic wood into something new, the craft gives a precious piece of Yakushima’s forest a second life.
