What is Yakusugi?
Only natural cedar trees from Yakushima that are over a thousand years old can be called “Yakusugi”. It has an extremely high oil content, strong preservative properties, and a unique, mellow aroma.
Sustainable craftsmanship that has lasted for thousands of years
The felling of living Yakusugi trees is now prohibited. The timber used on this trip consists entirely of fallen trees (buried in the ground) left over from the past, allowing this precious resource to continue in a new life form.
Itinerary
Material selection and design
Selection of raw wood chips and explanation of concepts
Listen to the history of Yakusugi and choose your favorite material from the various wood chips with different colors, textures, and aromas.
Rough shaping
Under the guidance of a professional, the wood chips are shaped into chopsticks that are easy to grip using a special wood plane or knife.
Multi-layer sandpaper fine grinding
By changing sandpaper of different grits in sequence, you can polish the surface to a smooth finish. The unique fresh scent of Yakusugi will be released during the polishing process.
Natural oil seal process
Coating with natural, food-grade beeswax or walnut oil locks in the woody aroma and increases the chopsticks’ durability and shine.
Completion and Assignment
