The Fantasy Theater After Sunset: The Mysterious Light of Yakushima
As the daytime hikers depart, Yakushima reveals its most mysterious side. Led by a guide, you’ll venture into the forests and coastline after sunset. From May to September, Nagata Beach may welcome newborn sea turtles; in June, fireflies and luminous mushrooms twinkle in the forests. That tranquility, surrounded by stars and far removed from the hustle and bustle of civilization, is Yakushima’s most breathtaking visual gift to travelers.
Collecting the Breath of the Forest: From Woodworking to Perfume
At the end of our journey, we bring the memories of the island to life. By selecting the finest Yakushima cedar wood, we handcraft a warm and elegant piece; and guided by a perfumer, we encapsulate the calming woody notes of the western forest trails and the refreshing mountain breeze in a specially made fragrance bottle. When you return to the city, a simple spritz will awaken the radiant, slow-paced moments of Yakushima with its aroma.
Itinerary
Day 1: Island Hopping and a Night of Starlight
Depart for Yakushima
Take a high-speed ferry to adjust your breathing and pace, and drift along with the waves to Anjipo Port. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and enjoy a leisurely island afternoon.
Nighttime Stargazing and Ecological Observation
Venture deep into the forest at night with a guide. Observe the ecology of sea turtles, fireflies, or bioluminescent fungi, depending on the season, and gaze up at the indescribable starlight.
Day 2: World Heritage Forest Trail Experience and Waterfall Energy
Nagata Beach and Western Forest Trail Walk
Stroll along the white star-sand beach, then enter the western forest trails within the World Heritage area. Look for wildlife in the evergreen broad-leaved forests and enjoy forest coffee and lunchboxes by the clear stream.
Okawa Falls and Scenic Spots Tour
Visit Ōkawa Falls, one of Japan’s 100 best waterfalls, and experience the sacred negative ion energy brought by its 88-meter drop.
Day 3: Woodcraft and Island Fragrance Blending
Yakusugi woodworking experience and flying fish lunch
Make your own Yakusugi souvenir. Enjoy authentic local cuisine at noon, featuring three ways to cook flying fish kabayaki, experiencing the simple yet intriguing flavors of the island.
Yakushima-style fragrance blending
Under the guidance of a perfumer, a personalized fragrance will be created. Afterwards, we will head to the port to board the 16:00 ferry, bidding farewell to the enchanting mountains and waters of Kagoshima.
