Itinerary Details
The Pulse of Four Thousand Years: The Pilgrimage Route of Jomon Sugi
The Jomon Sugi is not only a symbol of Yakushima Island, but also a living witness to Japan’s natural history. Wandering among the intertwined tree roots and granite paths, this 10-hour trek is a challenge to oneself. When the enormous, sprawling Jomon Sugi appears in the mist, the awe-inspiring sense of time’s passage is a profound emotion that can only be experienced by visiting it in person.
Alongside the deer: The rhythm of cycling on the western forest trails
Escape the confines of the train carriage and hop on an e-bike to explore the western forest trails, where you’ll experience World Heritage sites in the most direct way. The electric assist allows you to focus on admiring the lush green tunnels and azure seascapes, rather than just expending physical energy. Stop casually by the clear streams of Yokogawa Valley or enjoy lunch beside the Great Falls – this is the true essence of island adventure.
Itinerary
Day 1: Island Crossing and the Slow-Paced Island Life
Arrive at Yakushima and check into the hotel
Take a high-speed ferry from Kagoshima to either Awa or Miyanoura Port. After checking in, you’ll have free time. We recommend visiting “Shiosou” to enjoy local seafood and getting some rest to conserve your energy for tomorrow morning’s hike.
Day 2: Jomon Sugi Mt. Climbing Mountain – A Long March Through a Thousand Years
Jomon Sugi's mountain climbing adventure begins
We met our English-speaking guide in the early morning and took a shuttle bus to the trailhead. The hike, lasting approximately 9-10 hours, involved traversing the primeval forest with the guide’s explanations, and culminating in a pilgrimage to the giant Jomon Sugi.
Trail downhill and back
After completing the pilgrimage, descend the mountain via the same route. At 18:30, the guide will take you back to the hotel. For dinner, we recommend enjoying delicious Yakudon (Yaku Udon noodles) in the Awa area to restore your energy.
Day 3: Green Cycling Adventure and Waterfall Pilgrimage
Western Forest Trail E-Bike Cycling
Equip yourself with cycling gear and ride an electric bike to explore Nagata Beach, Yokogawa Valley, and the century-old lighthouse. Venture deep into the western forest trails in search of deer and monkeys.
Okawa Falls Lunch and Souvenir Shops
Enjoy lunch beside the magnificent Oikawa Falls (bring your own). Afterwards, visit Chihiro Falls and the souvenir shop “YAKUSHIMA BLESS”. Finally, your guide will take you back to the port to catch the afternoon ferry back to Kagoshima.
