Itinerary Details
Sankara: A Gift from Heaven
The name “Sankara” comes from Sanskrit and evokes the idea of divine grace—a fitting name for a retreat surrounded by the extraordinary nature of Yakushima. Perched between the mountains and the Pacific Ocean, Sankara Hotel & Spa offers sweeping views of the sea and an intimate sense of escape. Retreat to your spacious suite, wake to the horizon from the infinity pool, and let attentive butler service take care of the details. More than a place to stay, Sankara is an elegant way to experience the spirit of Yakushima.
A Private Encounter with Yakushima’s Ancient Forests
Choose between two distinctive hiking experiences, both accompanied by a private guide. For a challenge, take on the Jomon Sugi trail, a demanding 10–12-hour round trip through Yakushima’s ancient cedar forest, culminating in a face-to-face encounter with the island’s legendary Jomon Sugi. Alternatively, take a more leisurely walk through the lush, moss-covered forests of Shiratani Unsuikyo, whose otherworldly landscape inspired the forest scenes of Princess Mononoke. Whichever route you choose, return to Sankara for a beautifully prepared dinner featuring seasonal island ingredients, including local fish and flying fish, paired with carefully selected wines.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Yakushima & Discover the Forest
Private Arrival Transfer & Island Lunch
Arrive at Yakushima Airport or port, where your private transfer will be waiting. Begin your stay with a taste of the island, enjoying a local lunch featuring fresh seafood and seasonal vegetables before heading into the forest.
Yakusugi Land & Sankara Check-in
Take a gentle walk through Yakusugi Land, a forest filled with ancient cedar trees and lush greenery. Afterwards, head to Sankara Hotel & Spa and settle into your suite with the assistance of your private butler. In the evening, enjoy a refined dinner prepared by the hotel’s chef using seasonal local ingredients.
Day 2: World Heritage Forest Hiking — Choose Your Route
Route A: Jomon Sugi Hiking Adventure
Set out before sunrise with your private guide and take on one of Yakushima’s most iconic hikes. Trek deep into the ancient cedar forest on the challenging Jomon Sugi route, which takes approximately 10–12 hours round trip. Reaching the legendary Jomon Sugi after hours on the trail is a powerful experience that is best understood by standing beneath it yourself.
Route B: Shiratani Unsuikyo Forest Walk
Take a more relaxed journey into the lush forests of Shiratani Unsuikyo. Follow moss-covered trails beneath towering trees and breathe in the cool, moisture-rich air of Yakushima. The otherworldly scenery evokes the enchanted forests of Princess Mononoke. Return to Sankara in the afternoon and spend the rest of the day at your own pace—swim in the infinity pool, enjoy a quiet moment with a book, or indulge in an aromatherapy treatment
Day 3: Slow Morning & Departure
Ocean Views & Slow Breakfast
Start your final morning with Sankara’s signature breakfast overlooking the ocean. Take your time to enjoy the flavors of Yakushima and the peaceful surroundings before checking out. Depending on your departure time, you can also enjoy a short walk or visit a nearby viewpoint for one last glimpse of the island.
Private Transfer to the Airport or Port
Your private vehicle will take you to Yakushima Airport or port for your onward journey. Leave the island carrying memories of ancient forests, exceptional hospitality, and the quiet beauty of Yakushima.
