Tsunan Town is one of Japan’s snowiest regions, where farmers leave carrots beneath the snow throughout winter. The thick layer of snow works like a natural refrigerator, protecting the vegetables from extreme cold while encouraging them to convert stored starches into sugar. As a result, these overwintered carrots can reach around 12° Brix—similar to the sweetness of some fruits—and have a remarkably mild, clean flavor. Even those who usually avoid carrots may be surprised by how sweet they taste.
A Healing Escape into the Snowfield
Put on your winter boots and step into Tsunan’s vast snowy landscape. After carefully clearing away the snow, reach into the earth and pull out brightly colored carrots with your own hands. The simple joy of harvesting your own food makes for a wonderfully refreshing experience. Snowfield Meeting & Introduction
On-Site Meeting & Briefing
Meet at the designated location at New Greenpia Tsunan. After receiving the necessary tools, your guide will demonstrate how to safely dig up the carrots without damaging them.
Into the Snow-Covered Fields
Walk out to the snow-covered farmland and experience the deep snow beneath your feet. Look for the colorful “treasures” hidden beneath the snow and prepare for your harvest.
Picking experience and sharing of results
Digging & Harvesting Fun
Dig up the carrots by hand and discover how overwintered vegetables differ from freshly harvested ones. Your guide will help you clean your carrots, and you’ll have plenty of time to photograph your colorful harvest.
Take Home Your Harvest
Gather and pack the carrots you harvested during the experience. Take home your fresh winter harvest along with sweet memories of your time in Tsunan’s snow country.

- This is an outdoor activity conducted in deep snow. Please wear warm, waterproof clothing and snow boots suitable for snowy conditions.
- The itinerary may be changed or the activity may be cancelled due to severe weather or unsafe conditions.
