Itinerary Details
A passion that has endured for four hundred years: Junshang Dance
Gujo Odori, with a history of over 400 years, is an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. Its charm lies in “inclusivity,” where locals and tourists alike, simply by donning yukata and geta (wooden sandals), can become one in the simple yet rhythmic dance steps. Especially during the “Tokyo Odori” in mid-August, thousands of people dance under the moonlight, creating a breathtaking summer spectacle.
Water Castle Town: Clear springs and ancient streets
Besides its festivals, Gunjo Hachiman is famous for its water. The clear waters of the Soji River and the Kodara River flow through the old town. During the day, you can stroll through the alleys full of Edo-era charm, admire the magnificence of Gunjo Hachiman Castle, and experience the elegant and tranquil side of this town before attending the evening dances.
Itinerary
Day 1: Yukata Transformation and Dancing at the Festival
Arrival and Check-in & Yukata Experience
Upon arrival in Gujo-hachiman, check in. Those who choose the yukata option will be assisted by a professional instructor in changing into an elegant yukata to prepare for the festival night.
Workshops and Formal Activities
Attend the “Gujō Dance Workshop” specially prepared for beginners to quickly master the classic dance steps. After dinner, follow the crowd into the square, and with the crisp sound of your wooden clogs, immerse yourself in the enthusiastic circle of Japan’s three major Bon Odori dances.
Day 2: Ancient City Tour and Water City Sightseeing
Gunjo Hachiman Castle and famous water tour
After breakfast, climb to the top of the hill to visit Gujo Hachiman Castle, known as “Japan’s most beautiful mountain castle”. Afterwards, descend the mountain to visit the “Sōjisui”, one of the 100 most famous waters in Japan, and feel the cool water vapor of the castle town.
Free lunch and return
We recommend trying the local soba noodles or the refreshing Sichuan fish dishes. After lunch, you are free to purchase souvenirs, concluding this cultural journey with the lingering charm of the festival.
