A 400-Year Tradition: The Irresistible Spirit of Gujo Odori

With a history spanning more than 400 years, Gujo Odori is one of Japan’s most celebrated Bon dance traditions and a designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Its greatest charm is its openness: locals and visitors can join the circle simply by putting on a yukata and geta and following the easy, rhythmic dance steps. During the famous all-night dances in August, thousands of people fill the streets and dance until sunrise, creating one of Japan’s most unforgettable summer traditions.
