Winter Flavors: A Feast of Wild Oysters from Pucun
The Uramura area of Toba City, Mie Prefecture, is renowned for its oysters, prized for their sweetness, lack of unpleasant flavor, and plump meat, thanks to its unique environment where fresh and saltwater meet. This tour includes a special 100-minute all-you-can-eat feast of grilled and steamed oysters at a farm-operated oyster hut. In addition, guests can enjoy a variety of other dishes such as oyster stew, oyster rice, and deep-fried oysters, making it an unmissable winter pilgrimage for oyster lovers.
The Home of the Soul: Ise Grand Shrine and Tofu Yokocho
Ise Grand Shrine, with a history spanning over two thousand years, is hailed as the spiritual home of the Japanese people. Walking along the Tamagotachi approach to the inner shrine, you can feel the solemn energy and sacred atmosphere emanating from the ancient forest. After your visit, the adjacent Okage Yokocho showcases the lively atmosphere of the Edo to Meiji periods. Here, you can sample famous red-mochi (a type of rice cake) and Ise udon noodles, or choose from over 50 unique shops to select the most authentic handcrafted souvenirs.
Itinerary
Morning: Departure from Nagoya and an oyster feast
Meet at Nagoya Station and depart.
After checking in at the west exit of Nagoya Station, board a comfortable bus. Enjoy the scenic Ise Bay coastline along the way, and a Japanese-speaking tour leader will introduce the highlights of today’s itinerary.
Pucun Oysters - 100-minute all-you-can-eat
Head straight to the oyster shack in Tobaura Village. Enjoy a full-on oyster feast with grilled, steamed, fried, and boiled oysters. Not only can you get unlimited refills, but you can also learn how to properly shuck oysters and savor their fresh, sweet taste firsthand.
Afternoon: Visiting the sacred site and strolling through the ancient streets
Formal visit to the Inner Shrine of Ise Grand Shrine
Arrive at the Inner Shrine. Cross the Uji Bridge to enter the sacred area and calm your mind and body on the Tamasari approach. Complete your worship in front of the main shrine and experience the sacred atmosphere of being surrounded by the forest.
TOEFL Yokocho free play
The retro-style street adjacent to the Inner Palace has over 50 famous local shops. You can freely purchase Ise udon noodles, Wakamatsuya kamahoko (a type of sweet rice noodle), or enjoy delicious red bean cakes at Akafuku Main Store.
Return to Nagoya and disband
I returned to the starting point with the complimentary oyster rice and a red-hot souvenir. This marked the end of my rewarding winter trip.
